3CX to Genesys Cloud migration

Move your contact centre from 3CX to Genesys Cloud CX, keep 3CX for the wider business if it suits you, and carry every queue and journey across in a rehearsed cut-over.

In summary

A 3CX to Genesys Cloud migration moves your contact centre onto a platform built for routing, workforce engagement and integration at scale, while 3CX can keep serving the rest of the business. QVCCS has moved a 3CX contact centre to Genesys Cloud CX, live within weeks of its discovery. Certified specialists from our own bench record what your queues, IVRs and integrations really do, design the Genesys Cloud equivalent journey by journey, forward your numbers on the day and port them once the new service is proven.

Each part of a 3CX contact centre has a Genesys Cloud home, while 3CX can remain the phone system for general staff. Discovery decides what moves as it is and what is redesigned.

01

When a contact centre outgrows its phone system

3CX describes itself as an all-in-one business phone system and contact centre solution, deployable on premises, in a private cloud or hosted, and many organisations run their telephony on it well. Its call queues hold callers until an agent is free, with a choice of ring strategies, and its call centre features add agent dashboards, wallboards and CRM links. The question we hear is not whether 3CX works, but whether the contact centre now needs more than a phone system's queues can comfortably give it: routing on who the customer is, reporting that operations and finance both trust, a knowledge base, quality and workforce management, and integration with the systems that hold orders and accounts.

In the 3CX migration we have delivered, the provider's own reasons were reporting it could not rely on, call transfers that cost time for customers and staff, and no integrated knowledge base. Those are contact centre requirements, and they are why the contact centre moved to Genesys Cloud CX. Our leadership has worked in contact centre technology since 1984, so QVCCS starts every 3CX migration by agreeing what the contact centre needs to do that it cannot do today, and what must stay exactly as customers know it.

02

From 3CX queues and IVRs to Genesys Cloud

On 3CX, numbers reach digital receptionists and queues, and a polling strategy decides which agent rings next. On Genesys Cloud, numbers point to Architect inbound call flows, which can identify the caller, look them up in your systems and route them to queues where ACD skills and proficiencies decide who is offered each call. In-queue flows replace hold announcements with messages, callbacks and position information that supervisors can change through data tables, without anyone editing the flow itself. Schedules and emergency groups put opening hours, holidays and incident messages in operations' hands.

We do not copy a phone system's structure into a contact centre platform. Queues created to work around ring groups or reporting limits often become fewer, clearer queues with skills, and menu trees can be shortened once the flow knows who is calling. Every queue, IVR, schedule, announcement and wrap-up need on 3CX goes into a migration inventory with an owner and a decision: keep as it is, simplify or redesign. That inventory then becomes the test plan, so nothing customers rely on is lost in the move.

Integration is often where the biggest gains sit. Genesys Cloud data actions call your CRM, order or booking systems in real time, so the IVR can recognise a caller from their number, tell them about an order or delivery, and hand the agent a screen that already shows the right record. Where the APIs are not ready yet, the contact centre can still go live first and gain those journeys in a later release, as it did in our 3CX migration.

3CX can keep serving the business. The contact centre moves to Genesys Cloud, and every queue and journey customers rely on moves with it.

QVCCS point of view

03

Coexistence with 3CX, numbers and porting

Many organisations keep 3CX for general staff and move only the contact centre, and some move the contact centre in stages, team by team. Genesys Cloud connects to 3CX over SIP trunks, so agents can transfer callers to colleagues on 3CX extensions and back again, and numbers that still belong to teams on 3CX can stay there until those teams move. In our 3CX migration, the nursing and clinical lines stayed on 3CX at first and joined Genesys Cloud later through change requests, without disturbing the service already live.

Numbers usually move in two steps. On go-live day, your existing numbers are forwarded to new numbers on Genesys Cloud, through Genesys Cloud Voice or your chosen carrier on Bring Your Own Carrier (BYOC) Cloud, so every call reaches the new contact centre at once and the change can be reversed quickly. Once the new routing has been proven in live service, the numbers are ported and the forwarding is removed. Genesys notes that porting in the UK depends on carrier agreements, so we plan it with your carrier early rather than at the end.

04

How QVCCS runs your 3CX migration

We muster a multidisciplinary team from our own bench: a solution architect, a telecoms and SIP engineer, developers for flows and integrations, a business analyst, a test lead and a programme manager. Discovery workshops with your contact centre, IT and operations teams produce a requirements specification you sign before configuration starts. Agents use WebRTC phones in the browser with headsets, so there are no desk phones to replace, and we check networks and firewalls early so call quality is proven before the first live call, not after it.

Where timing matters, we can take a minimum viable product live first: voice and email, the queues and IVRs customers use every day, reporting and recording, with integrations and self-service following in later releases. That approach took a 3CX contact centre live about five weeks after its focused discovery began. Every release is tested before it reaches customers, ideally in a separate development organisation, and each go-live follows a written method statement with a rollback step agreed in advance.

05

Go-live, hypercare and growing afterwards

Go-live is planned to the minute: numbers forwarded in a short window, test calls to every number, agents and supervisors supported live, and hypercare for the days that follow while early issues are fixed fast. Training is role-based, with agents, supervisors and administrators each shown what they need, and administrators are given what they need to change schedules, messages and users themselves. After hypercare, support moves to the model you choose, from your own team to a partner's service desk or QVCCS managed services.

Moving off 3CX is often the start rather than the end. Once the contact centre is on Genesys Cloud CX, new teams, lines and channels can be added through small, tested changes, and self-service can grow as your systems expose more data. In our 3CX migration, the platform went on to carry clinical and pharmacy teams and then delivery booking in the IVR, and the success of that phase led straight into the next. The same team stays with you as the platform grows, so each change builds on the decisions and documentation from the first release.

  • 1 · Discover

Existing configuration audit and migration inventory

Captures every 3CX queue, IVR, schedule, report and integration, with an owner and a keep, simplify or redesign decision.

  • 2 · Define

    Requirements specification and traceability matrix

Links each requirement and 3CX behaviour to its Genesys Cloud design, build and test, so nothing is lost in the move.

  • 3 · Design

Questions

3CX to Genesys Cloud migration: common questions

Can we keep 3CX and move only the contact centre to Genesys Cloud?

Yes. We connect 3CX to Genesys Cloud with SIP trunks, design the numbering on both sides and test transfers in each direction. Agents work in Genesys Cloud CX, colleagues keep their 3CX extensions, and callers can be passed between them without redialling. Teams can also move across later, one at a time.

Do we have to port our numbers on go-live day?

No, and we usually recommend against it. Forwarding your numbers to new Genesys Cloud numbers on the day gets every call to the new contact centre at once and can be reversed quickly. Porting follows once the new routing has been proven in live service, planned with your carrier because UK porting depends on carrier agreements.

How long does a 3CX to Genesys Cloud migration take?

It depends on scope, integrations and how quickly your own systems and teams are ready. With a focused minimum viable product, one 3CX contact centre went live about five weeks after its discovery began, with integrations and self-service added in later releases. A broader first release takes longer and is planned in discovery.

Will our CRM still pop customer records?

Usually it does more. Genesys Cloud data actions look customers up in your CRM or order system during the call, so the IVR can use the record to route or serve the caller and the agent's script opens with the right details. Native integrations exist for systems such as Salesforce, Microsoft Dynamics 365, ServiceNow and Zendesk.
